| Sumario: | Cichlids are freshwater fish that comprise a veryimportant part of the diet of rural communities inYucatan Peninsula. Despite of this importance, there isa lack of information related with the management andexploitation of these fishes. Present paper describesthe empirical management of an endemic cichlid fish,Cichlasoma cienagae, performed by a group oforganized fishermen in Progreso, Yucatan. The entireprocess is an extensive aquaculture program, thatinvolves several stages and is supported by anempirical background of knowledge related with fishbiological traits and local aquatic ecosystems. Theresults obtained by Progreso fishermen could be thebasis for develop an appropriated and sustainable planof management and exploitation of native cichlids inYucatan Peninsula. |
