For proper management of HSW that enable municipalities to develop strategic planning is important to have reliable data. This study was aimed at determining per capita generation and composition of HSW generated in a small urban locality in the state of Veracruz during the winter season. In order to do this, houses were selected and stratified into three socio economical levels: residential, average and popular. Direct sampling was done for a seven day period, during which per capita generation and composition of HSW was monitored. The results revealed a significant statistical difference, with a confidence of 95 %, between the average per capita generation found in the location of study, compared to values set by the Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT) for small urban localities. However, the values for the composition of HSW were very similar to those reported as nationwide averages for organic matter, potentially recyclable products and unusable waste. In terms of potentially recyclable products, the study found that there was a greater generation of plastics than of glass.En México se han realizado estudios de generación y composición de residuos sólidos domésticos (RSD), sin embargo no han sido específicos para localidades urbanas pequeñas. Para realizar una gestión adecuada de RSD, que permita a los municipios desarrollar una planeación estratégica es importante contar con datos confiables. Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo determinar la generación per cápita promedio (GPC) y la composición de RSD generados en viviendas de una localidad urbana pequeña ubicada en el estado de Veracruz. Para lo anterior se realizó un muestreo directo en la época invernal con una duración de siete días y se aplicó una encuesta para clasificar las viviendas por estratos socioeconómicos en residencial, medio y popular además de estimar su GPC y composición. Los resultados revelaron que existe diferencia estadística significativa con una confianza del 95 %, de la GPC promedio de la localidad en estudio, en comparación con el valor establecido por la Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT) para localidades urbanas pequeñas. Además, en términos generales, la composición de los RSD, fue muy similar a la reportada como promedio a nivel nacional para materia orgánica, residuos potencialmente reciclables y residuos no aprovechables.
