Sumario:During the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th, scientific research in Mexico revolved mainly around the study of medicinal plants. This paper discusses the instruments and techniques used during this period by pharmacists during their teaching and research activities. The function that was related to chemical analysis procedures in accordance with European schools of Pharmacy; the main objective was to find alkaloids of therapeutic utility within these plants. This interest in the development of the teaching and practice of analytical chemistry was fundamental and eventually allowed the conformation of a new profession.
