The influence of time dependent Al2O3 dissolution during melting on the structure-bioactivity correlation of Mg containing silica-based bioactive glasses

Sumario:Alumina crucibles are less expensive than platinum crucibles. However, alumina crucibles tend to promote contamination of the melts, which affects the glasses, including their thermal and chemical properties. The unfavorable impact of Al2O3 on bioactivity has limited the use of alumina crucibles in bioactive glass production. However, research has also shown that a certain amount of Al2O3 enhances the resistance to crystallization without hindering bioactivity. MgO has shown a similar effect to Al2O3 on bioactive glasses, although there are conflicting results regarding the effect of MgO on the structure of silicate glasses. This study investigated the effect of MgO on the structure of silica-based bioactive glasses under different melting conditions, with emphasis on the correlation between structure and bioactivity. Structural investigations revealed that replacing 50 % of MgO with CaO (in mol %) and alumina contaminations did not significantly affect the QSin unit distribution. 31P MAS-NMR peaks shift to higher fields with MgO incorporation and alumina contaminations forming AlO4 tetrahedra in the glass network. The structural features of the glasses delay bioactivities but do not suppress them. Additionally, DTA results demonstrated synergistic improvement in thermal stability due to the presence of MgO and alumina contaminations. © 2024
