Descripción
Sumario:The use of scientific language in Leopoldo Alas’ work is displayed as successive formulations on a scale based on their utility within the narration: it helps establish the setting of a story by being casually inserted into the narrator’s discourse; it is used as a tool to verbally describe some of the characters, employing diatechnic variation to build the literary idiolects of scientists, particularly doctors; and lastly, it serves as a way of conveying the writer’s sense of humour. This humorous approach often carries a critical intention, which in Clarin’s case is not to vilify the creation or use of technical neologisms, but their unnecessary use or their trend-created abuse.
