Sumario:In an age that puts a premium on usefulness and practicality, the home has been reduced to a self-contained box, dominated by functionalism and disconnected from the natural world. This thesis critiques the limitations of functionalist architecture, particularly its tendency to confine domestic spaces to predefined uses that fail to accommodate the complexities of modern living. By challenging these rigid definitions of function, the thesis reintroduces the concept of "useless space" into domestic life and extends this idea beyond the interior, proposing the outdoor room as a solution to the disconnection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Free from predetermined purposes, this space serves as a blank canvas, allowing inhabitants to explore new ways of living and redefine the norms of domesticity by extending the home into the outdoors. Focusing on the potential of urban outdoor environments and drawing inspiration from the Mediterranean archetype of the outdoor room, this study aims to transform Athenian rooftops into vital extensions of domestic life. The introduction of outdoor rooms on rooftops addresses the divide between interior and exterior spaces, reclaiming rooftops as flexible environments that provide a much-needed "breathing space" in urban life. Through a detailed study on outdoors domesticity and a climate analysis on Athenian rooftops, the research proposes a theoretical design methodology that conditions the outdoor spaces making rooftops truly habitable and transforming this overlooked urban ground into green true outdoor living rooms. The introduction of greenery to rooftops is not only enhancing livability but also contributes to cooling the urban environment by reducing ambient and surface temperatures, helping to mitigate the urban heat island effect. This thesis seeks to redefine patterns of domestic life by offering a versatile space which evolves along with its occupants and by integrating indoor and outdoor environments. Ultimately, it aims
