The Indus floodplain is an area of special interest as it was the core of an unprecedented urban development. Studying the relationship between agricultural dynamics and urbanisation in the Indus Valley is key to understand not only the role of the environment in Indus societal transformation, but also the economic basis that allowed the rise of the Civilisation. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to carry out a multi-proxy archaeobotanical study of two sites in Sindh, Pakistan, to disentangle agricultural strategies and plant food preparation in the lower Indus Valley during the pre-urban and urban periods. The results obtained suggest a more diverse and flexible plant-based economy in the area than what was previously acknowledged.La Civilització de la Vall de l'Indus (IVC) és la cultura urbana més antiga coneguda del sud d'Àsia (2600-1900 aC). Tot i que la recerca arqueològica es ve portant a terme a la regió des de fa més d'un segle, les anàlisis arqueobotàniques sistemàtiques encara no estan generalitzades, i les que s'han realitzat estan concentrades en els límits geogràfics de la civilització, especialment el Gujarat i la regió oriental de Harappa. La plana inundable de l'Indus és una zona d'especial interès ja que va ser el nucli d'un desenvolupament urbà sense precedents. Estudiar la relació entre les dinàmiques agrícoles i el procés d’urbanització en aquesta zona és clau per entendre no només el paper del medi ambient en el desenvolupament d’aquesta civilizació, sinó també la base econòmica que va permetre la seva aparició. L'objectiu d'aquesta tesi doctoral és dur a terme un estudi arqueobotànic multi-proxy de dos jaciments al Sindh, Pakistan, per tal d’entendre les estratègies agrícoles i de preparació d'aliments vegetals a la zona baixa de l'Indus durant els períodes preurbà i urbà.
