| Sumario: | [EN]The book The Function of the Semicircular Canals: An Experimental Study «La función de los conductos semicirculares: Estudio experimental» by Dr. Jaime Vera López is situated within a period of substantial advancement in international scientific knowledge. The work examines vestibular physiology from experimental and cognitive perspectives, building upon the line of inquiry initiated by Flourens and subsequently developed by other prominent scholars. Despite the structural and methodological constraints of nineteenth-century Spanish science, the author successfully replicated relevant experiments and contributed meaningfully to contemporary debates. At the time, research efforts focused on elucidating the mechanisms underlying spatial orientation and locomotion in animals, ultimately leading to the identification of the functional role of the semicircular canals in maintaining balance. Pigeon experiments, in which mechanical disruption of the canals produced marked alterations in locomotion, provided critical empirical evidence. This study synthesizes and contextualizes a research that has been unjustly overlooked, yet anticipated and advanced essential insights into the role of the semicircular canals as fundamental components in the control of posture and movement. |
