Sumario:Francois Forel is usually considered as the founder of Limnology. However, as in any scientific discipline, there are also forerunners, often very valuable, albeit largely unknown. The well known American philosopher Thoreau is one of those. Here I report his observations on a deep lake in 1845-1847 for Spanish-speaking people, which deserve him recognition as another founder of Limnology.
