| Sumario: | This introductory chapter identifies an emerging trend of transnational science fiction narratives, unpacks cosmopolitanism as a concept, and situates the book within the current landscape of science fiction scholarship. It also emphasizes the centrality of borders to cosmopolitan conflicts and the science fiction genre. To this end, the introduction proposes that a cosmopolitan outlook based on the analysis of borders as sites of struggle (Mezzadra and Neilson 2013, 18) is particularly productive for the study of transnational sf narratives. It then tackles the paradox that it is often US American movies, major productions, and films from other first-world countries that tend to address cosmopolitan conflicts. Taking this context into account, the introductory chapter argues that such films offer abundant opportunities to problematize and interrogate cosmopolitan discourses. Finally, the introduction closes with an overview of the different book chapters.
