Diego Siloé and the singular chancel of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios de Iznalloz, Granada The work of Diego Siloé meant the irruption in Spain of a full Renaissance conception, as it was shown from Manuel Gómez-Moreno to Manfredo Tafuri. His trip to Italy, during the second decade of the sixteenth century, laid the foundations of his solid knowledge of classical language and the new spatial paradigms. Among the less known works carried out by Siloé in the Kingdom of Granada, the chevet of the church of Iznalloz is a very singular case, as it assumes the compositional elements and articulations typical of a civil architecture of a noble character, where the Italian experience of Siloé could be present. At this chevet, a powerful horizontal prismatic volume crowned by a projecting cornice and arranged by a series of classical windows and cornices, perfectly composed, provide the church with a civil façade. Inside, this large volume houses, in a camouflaged manner, the apse of the temple, flanked by two sacristies and six large rooms arranged on three levels of height and connected by wide spiral staircases with carved handrails. Built in stone around 1550, this architecture with palatial features stands out in its urban context and over the valley, as if recalling from a distance a city that never existed. This research is part of the R+D project (HAR2016-76371-P): Diego de Riaño, Diego de Siloe and the transition from the Gothic to the Renaissance in Spain and is based on an exhaustive architectural survey, which has not existed until now, as well as on a detailed doc- umentary and material analysis. The objectives include the reconstruction of the original composition of the partially disfigured façade and the recreation of the church and its environment, which has now been greatly transformed.Edizioni CaracolExpresión Gráfica y ArquitectónicaHUM799: Estrategias de Conocimiento Patrimonial2021info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfapplication/pdfhttps://hdl.handle.net/11441/147200https://doi.org/10.17401/lexicon.s.2-ampliatoacostareponame:idUS.
