Sumario:The coastal zone constitutes an important livelihood for women engaged in fishing activities. However, oil disasters that press the marine environment are becoming more frequent. This fact highlights the socio-‐environmental risks faced by groups of women with a high dependence on the marine environment. In this context, this doctoral thesis examines the catastrophe provoked by the oil tanker Prestige in the Galician coastal zone of Spain in 2002, and the Galician shellfisherwomen affected by it. The objective of the study is to analyse the Prestige disaster through a gender perspective, identifying the elements that have affected Galician shellfisherwomen, as well as their role in the recovery of the shellfishing zones.
