Sumario:During the height of the Almoravid offensive (late 11th and early 12th centuries), the city of Toledo was one of the main battlegrounds in the borderlands between the kingdoms of León and Castile. During this period, a series of military engagements took place, illustrating the different methods of warfare employed in the Middle Ages: raids and attrition, positional movements, sieges, and so on. Fortified elements play a crucial role in understanding this scenario, as the military enclosures of Toledo and its surroundings were key to the citys conquest. In this sense, the objective of this text is to examine the role of the castles in Toledos first line of defense and their interconnection with the city on the Tagus River. We intend to analyze the strategic value of these fortified enclosures, their evolution throughout the various campaigns, and finally, to assess their significance once they fell to the Almoravids.
