| Sumario: | Reference via adjectives typically requires an intermediate step: nominalization through overt derivational affxing. However, many languages allow even unaffixed adjectives to be used referentially. This thesis is a case study of this use of adjectives (called adjectival determiner phrases or A-DPs) in Slovak. Based on corpus evidence, I describe their syntax and semantics. I argue that Slovak A-DPs, in contrast to derived nominalizations, have no nominal layer in their structure. The two meanings observed for A-DPs are shown to derive from the underlying character of adjectives themselves, speci cally, from the fact that the semantic representation contains two variables, one for the property denoted by the adjective and one for the bearer of that property. Additional research questions addressed in the thesis include a comparison of affix-based and affixless nominalization strategies, as well as the role and the distribution of determiners in Slovak A-DPs in light of their interaction with information structure. |
