Sumario:ENG- Foster care is a child protection measure that provides a safe environment for children who cannot live with their families of origin. This measure prioritizes the well-being of children and their holistic development, while efforts are made toward family reunification and/or consideration of other long-term alternatives. This thesis explores the factors that influence decision-making processes regarding foster care and reunification with the family of origin, in order to propose improvements in policies and practices related to this protective measure. The reference population of the research includes children in foster care, their families of origin, foster carers, and the professionals directly involved in the intervention process. The thesis focuses on decision-making processes concerning when and how to initiate a foster placement, how it is managed once established, as well as its follow-up and termination. This compendium consists of three articles that address key aspects related to foster care. First, it aims to identify the factors that influence the likelihood of family reunification after a foster placement, highlighting both the elements that facilitate this process and those that hinder it, with the goal of better understanding the dynamics that support stability for children with their families of origin. Second, it analyses the decision-making processes of professional child protection teams in Catalonia regarding non-kinship foster placements, examining agreements and discrepancies among different teams to understand the practices and criteria applied. Finally, it explores the specific dynamics of emergency foster placements, including their duration, the transition of children to a new home, and the support needs of the involved agents, with the aim of proposing improvements to ensure the effectiveness and appropriateness of this protective measure
