The parameters controlling metal uptake have been evaluated in order to analyze the influence of soil composition on the fixation of manganese from aqueous solutions. Soils and bed sediments are characterized by basic pH and elevated content on organic matter, clay fraction and Fe and Al oxides, with maximum values in Miocene soil samples. Such physical-chemical characteristics favor the adsorption capacity of soils. In fact, Mn batch experiments show a very high solute saturation density in Miocene marls (about 1 700 mg/g), even greater than the adsorption capacity in Quaternary soil and bed sediment samples (about 1200 mg/g).
