Due to its strong physical presence, its strategic and political role or its long-standing mystical and religious conditioning that human beings have been giving it throughout history, the mountain has marked the relationship of the inhabitants with their different mountainous habitats. However, in the present global era, the identity of place is increasingly diluted and the landscapes are homogenized in excess, overlapping with the intrinsic topographic characteristics that confer them quality. The present article, through an inspection of the topographic factor in the development of landscape identity and exemplified by a series of current landscape architecture designs, aims to demonstrate the maxim that a re-reading of the topography in the landscape design can turn the today’s impoverished panorama described. Thus, a look at the past, with the return to the mountain, helps to look towards the future and to a new landscape identity.[ES] Los factores que definen la identidad del paisaje son amplios, variados y variables, pero sin duda la topografía ha tenido un papel relevante en su conformación. Por su fuerte presencia física, su papel estratégico y político o por sus longevos condicionantes místicos y religiosos que el ser humano le ha ido otorgando a lo largo de la historia, la montaña ha marcado la relación de los pobladores con sus distintos hábitats montañosos. Sin embargo, en la presente era global, la identidad del lugar se diluye cada vez más y los paisajes se homogeneizan en exceso, superponiéndose a las características topográficas intrínsecas que les confieren cualidad. El presente artículo, a través de una inspección del factor topográfico en la gestación de la identidad del paisaje y ejemplificado mediante una serie de proyectos de arquitectura del paisaje actuales, pretende demostrar la máxima de que una relectura de la topografía en el proyecto de paisajismo puede hacer virar el empobrecido panorama actual descrito.
