This work has been made possible by consecutive temporary contracts between the Instituto Nacional Empleo - Consejo Superior Investigacines Cientificas (INEM-CSIC), signed 5 years ago with the intention of compensating for the shortage of personnel in the MNCN. At present, the mineral collection, containing more than 13,000 specimens, is almost completely processed, with a computer file in which all this information is available. The maintenance and scientific use of collections involves the following: a) Documentation, b) Research, c) Management (loans and consultation, acquisitions and disposal of material, custody of specimens, support to the pedagogic sector, support to research and education, plans). The exhibition and exhibition policy are described concisely, as it is important for public understanding of the collections.[ES] Se describen en el presente trabajo los aspectos más destacados de la gestión de las colecciones geológicas del MNCN, realizados a partir de 1983, fecha en la que el Dr. Garda Guinea asumió la responsabilidad de conservador en funciones de las Colecciones de Geología del MNCN Tras varias décadas de abandono, el Museo ha entrado en una nueva etapa de reorganización y dinamismo con el fin de transformarse en un moderno centro de investigación y conservación acorde con su potencial y tradición. Se ha procedido a la recuperación y posterior inventariado e informatización de los materiales contenidos en las colecciones geológicas del Museo. En el momento actual, la colección de mineralogia, con más de 13.000 ejemplares, se ha procesado en su casi totalidad. La infonnación se halla disponible en un archivo informatizado. Se describe la secuencia completa de ordenación, localización e informatización de los minerales, así como los distintos aspectos relacionados con el mantenimiento y uso científico de las colecciones: a) Documentación; b) Investigación; e) Gestión (préstamos y consultas, entradas y salidas de material, apoyo al sector pedagógico, apoyo a la investigación y educación, y futuros proyectos).
