Description
Summary:[EN] This article deals with the anticipatory and modern spirit of the ideas about the nature of the article (and its role in Spanish Grammar) developed by Amado Alonso in his 1933 work «Estilística y Gramática del artículo en español». Two main points are made. First, it is shown that the attempt to account for the genesis and development of this determiner through a theory whic h emphasizes the role subjective choices in linguistic expressions is not really successful. On the contrary, we show that the semantic-philosophical analysis of this category developed in Alonso's text is crucial and insightful. More precisely, this work anticipates the recent hypothesis that reference of NP's is due to the article and not to the name, it also gives a preliminary view of the idea that certain bare NP's are predicates with a «type» interpretation, it shows, moreover, that the meaning of bare NP's in focus positions is a contrastive one.
