Sumario:[EN] This article briefly presents the evolution of the CSIC research centers that led to the creation of the Pyrenean Institute of Ecology (IPE). The Estación de Estudios Pirenaicos, created in 1942, soon became the Instituto de Estudios Pirenaicos (IEP), directed by Professors Luis Solé Sabarís and José Manuel Casas Torres and based at the Department of Geography of the University of Zaragoza. They were the organizers of numerous meetings, international congresses on the Pyrenees and the promoters of the journal Pirineos. In 1963 the Pyrenean Center of Experimental Biology was created in Jaca under the direction of Dr. Enrique Balcells Rocamora, with Pedro Montserrat Recoder acting as vice-director. In 1968 the IEP moved to Jaca, with Enrique Balcells also as director. From 1983 the merger of the two research centers gave rise to the IPE. The scientific evolution of Drs. Balcells and Montserrat, some of their personal traits and the legacy they passed on to other younger scientists are explained. This legacy is responsible for much of the current scientific philosophy of the IPE and can be summarized in the integration of human activities at different spatial and temporal scales to explain the evolution of mountain landscapes and their dynamics in a context of Global Change.
