Sumario:The answer to the current changes that take place in our society implies new demands for our universities. What functions correspond to a University today? Training, research, professional training through professional skills, social sensitivity... but not only in response to present demands, but anticipating them. In this context, how important is the quality of teaching? Without a doubt, it is one of the keys. In this work, different empirical studies analyze which factors significantly influence the improvement of the motivation and academic performance of engineering students, both in the first years and in more advanced subjects. It is concluded, on one hand, that the application of active methodologies, even in large groups, improves these indicators of teaching quality, especially in those students at risk of academic failure. It is also analyzed the importance of creativity in order to achieve academic excellence in technical studies. This is a generic skill usually neglected today in the curricula. Finally, it is proposed the application of "Embedded Methodologies" of learning in a coordinated and simultaneous way, with the objective to improve the quality of engineering education in our technical studies.
