| Sumario: | The Anonymous Description of the Hospital of Jerusalem is the most extensive and informative description of the daily-medical work of the order of the Hospitallers in the Holy City. By its studying, we can access to the knowledge of the medical care and the work of attention deployed with the poor and the sick that defined the sense and the particular character of this Order in the Holy Land. Like any other text, the Anonymous Description... contains a wide set of meanings and refers to a vast universe of agents and social functions. In this work it will be indicated the discursive operation within the text and its possible meanings around a “legitimizing dimension” of the existence of the Order trough the assistance work of the Hospitallers. Our approach will be necessarily an interdisciplinary one. We will present some of the philological problems derived from the analysis of the source and some of the possible solutions emerged from the combination of readings from the field of the history of medicine, the social history and the medieval literature. |
