| Sumario: | [EN] The Royal Spanish Company of the Philippines was founded in 1785, a late date despite antecedents stretching back to 1729. One of the possible factors contributing to this delay was the Dutch East India Company’s interest in blocking Spain’s direct route to Asia and undermining its competition in accessing silver in the Philippines and Canton. This article analyses these circumstances in light of unpublished documentation from the VOC archive, contextualizing the issue within the framework of Dutch-Hispanic rivalry. |
