Traditionally, grammatical gender (within the French language) is considered to be a transparent category. Gender is arbitrary for nouns used to refer to inanimate or non-human objects; it is motivated by the referent's sex for nouns used to refer to human entities: the masculine grammatical gender is linked to the semantic trait [+ male], whereas the feminine grammatical gender is linked to the semantic trait [+ female]. This monosemic understanding of gender can sometimes seem convincing, but is soon limited by the numerous asymmetrical semantic analyses of masculine and feminine versions of a same word (as tend to show words like cuisinier, cuisinière or professionnel, professionnelle). An inclusive conception of grammatical gender would thus enable to incorporate what first seems to be some sort of «connotation» within the semantic description of both masculine and feminine grammatical genders. A more accurate analysis of grammatical gender also allows to question the notion of motivation, and to introduce those of non-compositionality and fixedness.
