Resumo:This thesis aims to examine the relationship between impulsivity and depression and anxiety symptoms in childhood and compare it with its relationship with aggressive behaviour, which is present in many externalizing disorders. To achieve this goal, firstly it was necessary to adapt the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale for children (BIS-11c), the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED) and the Proactive/Reactive Aggression questionnaire for teachers (APR-m), we also examined the parent-child agreement on anxiety symptoms and established who is the best informant. A sample of 1508 children participated in the first phase of this study, 562 of them were selected to the second phase based on their scores on the anxiety and/or the depression measure. Our data indicate that impulsivity was related to anxiety and depression, and showed higher relationships with measures of internalizing symptoms than with aggression. Motor Impulsivity was the component most related to anxiety and depression. Cognitive Impulsivity, on the other hand, was negatively related to anxiety and depression. These findings highlight the relevance of impulsivity in childhood psychopathology.
