From the second stage onwards, as also the adult female, all carry ten anal ring hairs. The problem is to explain the existence of the number of such hairs as six and ten respectively. When a quadruped walks it lifts one leg at a time resting its body on three legs. This ibecomes the minimum number to support a body. We realize this hegt when we compare a tripod with a chair. The flat fish-like, body of a coccid larva rests on six legs. When it walks it raises three legs at a time, resting its 'body on the other three, the minimum to support it. Thus the six legs of an insect can be consiclered as two sets of three each. Taking as an example it lifts, at one and the same time, the first leg on the right, the middle leg of the left side, and the last leg of the right, when its 'body rests on the other three legs, the first leg on the left, the middle leg on the right, and the third leg on the left. Now the same, in principie, applied to the six anal rings hairs.
