Loss-of-function mutations in sphingosine-1-phosphate lyase (SGPL1) cause primary adrenal insufficiency and as a key degradative enzyme in the sphingolipid pathway, SGPL1 also influences the balance of pro-proliferative and pro-apoptotic sphingolipids.
