Sumario:[EN] We present some notes and ideas on the meanings ofἔπος from Homer to the Imperial age, arising from the writing of the corresponding entry in the Diccionario Griego-Español (DGE). The research on the syntactic, semantic or contextual categories that condition the different meanings sheds light, in particular, on the ancient uses of the singular, which pose the greatest difficulties of interpretation and translation. Furthermore, the study of the evolution of the word helps us to understand the ways of survival of the singular (specialized uses and fixed expressions, in particular ὡς ἔπος εἰπεῖν) and the specialization process that makes that plural ἔπη ends up naming the hexametric verses. This is the main meaning in the context of poetic composition or performance
