| Sumario: | This study examines the evolution of heritage values in the city of Cuenca (Ecuador) between 1860 and 2018, with special emphasis on the artistic value. The purpose is to understand how narratives about the built city have changed over time and how these visions have influenced processes of conservation, intervention, and appropriation of urban space. The research is based on the idea that heritage is not a static entity but rather a social and historical construction that is reconfigured according to the political, cultural, and economic contexts of each period. To address this process, a mixed-methods approach was applied, combining historical methods with qualitative and quantitative tools, drawing from one hundred and ninety-six documentary sources and a graphic corpus composed of compiled historical images, including representative photographs of each period that reinforced the interpretation of the discourses. The information was organized into five historical periods and classified into categories of heritage values (historical, artistic, social, scientific, and environmental), analyzed through content and discourse analysis techniques supported by ATLAS.ti software, and complemented with semantic networks and mind maps that helped identify patterns of change and their relationship with urban, legislative, and cultural dynamics. The results reveal a trajectory in which Cuenca moves from a monumental and Europeanized vision (1860–1939) to tensions between modernization and conservation (1940–1969), followed by the institutionalization of heritage discourse (1970–1999) and the consolidation of a heritage image from 2000 onwards, although in the last decade processes linked to gentrification and tourism have emerged. Artistic value appears as a constant guiding thread, redefined in each stage and supported both by urban iconography and the visual material analyzed. In conclusion, the study confirms that heritage values are dynamic and changing, and it proposes a methodology that can be replicated in other cities, while underlining the importance of critical human interpretation in the face of the symbolic and visual richness of cultural heritage. |
