Zombi 2 (Fulci, 1979) consolidó el subgénero "spaghetti zombie", combinando violencia gráfica, sadismo e influencias del cómic pulp y el falso documental (Mondo Cane). Fulci despojó a los zombis de cualquier humanidad residual, transformándolos en agentes de caos que criticaban el colonialismo y la racionalidad positivista, a diferencia del enfoque sociopolítico de Romero. El cine italiano priorizó el espectáculo visual sobre la narrativa, con bajo presupuesto y distribución marginal, generando obras como Paura nella città dei morti viventi (1980) o Dèmoni (1985). Estas producciones, pese a su recepción crítica negativa, influyeron en el mainstream (ej: Pet Sematary) y mantuvieron viva la serie B mediante el home video.
