Following his family’s efforts to become a prominent and wealthy lineage within the Portuguese Kingdom, Francisco Giraldes succeeded in gradually increasing the family’s prestige. He was first appointed ambassador of the Kingdom of Portugal to England and France. After the incorporation of the Portuguese Crown into the Spanish Monarchy, he managed to gain the favor of Philip II. Thanks to an inheritance he received, Giraldes would ultimately become a singular case, as he inherited the donatary captaincy of Ilhéus in Portuguese America and was later appointed governor-general of the Estado de Brasil. In short, this article analyzes a remarkable case of social ascension within the Kingdom of Portugal and Portuguese America in the second half of the 16th century.El siguiente artículo investiga la particular trayectoria de Francisco Giraldes, miembro de la familia de origen italiano Giraldi, quien consiguió ir ascendiendo en el escalafón social del Reino de Portugal a lo largo del s. XVI. Tras los esfuerzos familiares por convertirse en un importante y rico linaje del Reino luso, Francisco Giraldes consiguió ir paulatinamente incrementando el prestigio del mismo. En primer lugar, fue nombrado embajador del Reino de Portugal en Inglaterra y Francia y, tras la incorporación del Reino luso a la Monarquía Hispánica, consiguió ganarse el favor de Felipe II. Gracias a la herencia recibida, Giraldes finalmente se convertiría en un caso singular, puesto que heredó la capitanía donataria de Ilhéus, en la América portuguesa y, posteriormente, fue nombrado gobernador general del Estado de Brasil. En definitiva, se analiza una trayectoria singular de ascensión social en el Reino de Portugal y la América portuguesa, perteneciente a la Monarquía Hispánica, en la segunda mitad del s.
