Descripción
Sumario:This paper examines sexual maturity of the horse mackerel, Trachurus trachurus, during fishery surveys carried out in the spring of 1984, 1986 and 1987 on the Galician and Cantabrian continental shelf (NW and N Spain). The sex ratio of the horse mackerel was close to 1:1 for the whole area, although significant differences appear between geographic zones. Total length at first maturity was 20.9 cm for males and 21.9 cm for females. This is the first time that these variables are reported for the area. The proportions of males and females inthe active stage during the spawning period are compared between geographic zones. The variations in these proportions are discussed and related to oceanographic conditions of the area.
