Descripción
Sumario:[EN] The contribution is part of the wider research concerning the defensive systems of the internal Abruzzo and specifically of the Marsican territory. The investigation takes into consideration a rare example of a fortress, originally accessible only by water, strategically located on an islet that lapped the shores of the ancient Lake Fucino. It is the castle built in the second half of the fifteenth century by Antonio Piccolomini which incorporates a previous medieval tower located in the historic center of Ortucchio (AQ). The eponymous tectonic basin lake, fed by precipitation and streams, did not have a natural emissary, reason why the water level was variable and dependent on the intensity and frequency of seasonal atmospheric events. Consequently, the historic center of Ortucchio underwent a change of physical-perceptive identity passing from the conformation of peninsula to that of island and the fortress was one of the distinctive places in the changing anthropic scenario of Lake Fucino before its drying up (1875).
