Descripción
Sumario:On the basis of the theory of reduced vowels expounded in EMERITA 26, 1958, 249-309, the author founds an explanation of the prothetic vowel in various Indo-European languages, according to which it is the result of the development of a reduced vowel before the first consonant in certain phonetic contexts; although only a small group of languages has kept this reduced vowel and converted it into a full one. Before H the prothetic vowel has certain special characteristics and exists in a greater number of languages. Before a sonant and a consonant there can habe existed a prothetic vowel as well as before an H. The tambers of the prothetic vowels correspond exactly to that of the inner vowels derived from the reduced vowels, as the above mentioned artiche and EMERITA 27, 1959, 155-62 prove.
