Although friendship is well known as a factor of well-being in later life, the prevalence of friendship in older adult networks and its unequal distribution has been examined only in few studies. Through secondary data analysis of two cross-sectional surveys carried out in Switzerland in 1979 and 2011, respectively, the increasing presence of close friends was confirmed. Our results show that this trend was part of a broader lifestyle change after retirement, with increasing social engagements. However, this trend does not include a general decrease in social inequalities in friendship opportunities. Overall, friendship increase among older adults has contributed to a polarization of living conditions, with a majority of active, healthy persons contrasting with a minority of individuals who accumulate penalties. This work was supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (grant number 51NF40-160590, grant number CRSII1_129922/1)Peer reviewedSage PublicationsSwiss National Science FoundationBaeriswyl, Marie [0000-0001-8358-4643]Oris, Michel [0000-0002-6435-9448]Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas [https://ror.org/02gfc7t72]202420242022info:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501Publisher's versioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionhttp://hdl.handle.net/10261/353918reponame:DIGITAL.CSIC.
