| Sumario: | [EN] The restoration of the constitutional order in 1820 in Spain took place at a crucial moment for Puerto Rico. The island was adjusting to the new reality of the Monarchy just as its economy was experiencing a definitive transition toward commercial agriculture. All this caused much economic and social fragmentation. What is more, the liberal governments of Puerto Rico had to confront not only the advance of Caribbean insurgencies but also the determined opposition of various elites. Ecclesiastical elites, in particular, were very jealous of their privileges, especially fiscal ones.
