Description
Summary:[EN] Within the framework of Visual Studies, this research aims to open a third analytical pathway focused on exploring the contemporary existence of an «alternative» relationship of succession between word and image literature and visual arts beyond the dominant categories of ekphrasis and illustration described in Áron Kibédi s (1930-2018) taxonomy in Criterios para describir las relaciones entre palabra e imagen (2000). This research is structured around the case study of the artwork Sobre la aparición (2015) by the Chilean visual artist Camila Lobos (b. 1989). According to Kibédi s categories, it is currently possible to identify ekphrasis and illustration as key figures in the relationship of succession between visual arts and literature, insofar as they encompass both directions of this operation: the transition from image to word and from word to image, respectively. However, neither ekphrasis nor illustration can describe the alternative forms of succession between word and image that emerge within contemporary visual arts. Therefore, the relevance of this research lies in providing scholars, critics, and visual artists with a starting point from which to broaden the field of study toward an «alternative» relationship of succession between word and image one that enables a comprehensive examination of contemporary visual works that do not fit neatly into the categories of either ekphrasis or illustration. Due to its interdisciplinary approach, this work may be of interest to specialists in the relationship between word and image from the fields of visual arts, Visual Studies, and Literary Studies.
