| Sumario: | (English) The urban continuum of Barcelona extends through the Baix Llobregat, the mobility also forms an inseparable whole, the same happens with the economy, with social and cultural life; geography and the environment once again ratify that the periphery and the central city are the same area. However, in urban and governance terms, disruptions and discontinuities appear, which make not recognize the whole as a city. The periphery of Baix Llobregat was formed during the Fordist period that ended in the 70s, (in the same way that it happens with most of the big European cities). Why four decades are not enough for this periphery to fully incorporate itself into the city? To answer this question, and at the same time detect the urban pathologies that derive from this circumstance, we have investigated four fields: 1. First explorations of Baix Llobregat (1970s). Environmental, urban and territorial matrices. The Environmental Matrix is conceptualized according to three types of terrain, three mountain ranges, and three trios of streams. The Urban Matrix in the 70s was formalized taking into account the large mobility and irrigation infrastructures, the urban land spots in each municipality, and the new morphologies: housing and industrial estates, and mountain developments. The crossing of both matrices is especially fertile. 2. Periphery. City or metropolis? The case of Barcelona On one hand, there is a reflection on the main debates on the peripheries during the 80s in Europe, and on the other hand, an analysis of five European cities, comparing the demographics of the different administrative areas (city, metropolitan area, and region) and the governance and planning of each one of them. This part is an ideological and conceptual base that we put in relation to Barcelona. 3. Barcelona, in and out of the ring road. Already in the 70s, the Barcelona-city overflows the ring road. This part studies the successive areas of local and general administration around Barcelona, the origins of Barcelona-city (1970s), the urban planning in the Barcelona area, and the urban transformation of Barcelona-city (1975- 2020). 4. The construction by fragments of the Baix Llobregat in Barcelona. We return here to Baix Llobregat to analyze its construction by fragments in these 4 decades. We study the continuity of the highways in the face of the discontinuity of the avenues, the construction by fragments within each municipality. We end with two studies that thematically address the whole of Baix Llobregat, such as Strategic Residential Areas and mountain developments. Each Part has its own conclusions that, if we put them together properly, they constitute the conclusions of the thesis. Finally, a section on Future Hypotheses is opened that helps to contextualize some aspects of the thesis itself and at the same time suggest ways of urban implementation of its postulates. |
