Sumario:Innovation plays a crucial role in the economy, therefore a good understanding of the effects and implications of public R&D support to firms is needed. However, research on the topic, especially a dynamic approach, is quite sparse. The main objective of this study is to assess the determining factors that influence the probability of receiving public support to innovation in Spain, as well as to determine the impact of these subsidies on firm’s outcomes such as innovation expenditure and patent registration. The analysis revealed that, first, having received public support previously, cooperate in R&D activities, and receiving external funding increase the probability of receiving subsidies, whereas firm sales growth or age are not significant. Second, subsidised firms do increase the innovation expenditure most of the years, but they do not fill more patents than non-subsidised firms. These findings suggest that a more targeted public policy, as well as one focused on the implications, and not only the mere transfer of money, would increase their effectiveness.
