| Sumario: | The growing pressure toward sustainability transition is affecting all components of the agri-food system, and changing the way food is produced, marketed, and consumed. In this context, developing more sustainable business models (SBMs) has become increasingly crucial for the survival of agri-food companies and industries as environmental and social pressures from all types of stakeholders are escalating. However, while SBMs represent an emerging topic in agri-food supply chains, few tools exist to support agri-food companies and organizations implementing them. There is a clear lack of knowledge about how sustainability objectives are virtually implemented in business models (BMs) of agri-food supply chains to deliver value on a triple bottom line (economic, environmental, social). Therefore, the objective of this contribution is to investigate how agri-food supply chains respond to the challenge of sustainability in terms of business model (BM) transformation. We take stock of relevant literature to explore new approaches and conceptualizations for prompting the transition toward more SBMs in the agri-food business, with mention to the European context. It is assumed that integrating sustainability in the process of BM shift can identity the business areas most suited for potential innovations and reforms in terms of sustainable value delivery, providing consequently new modes of value generation and capture in agri-food supply chains. |
