| Sumario: | This article provides an analytical and methodological framework for studying how institutional quality influence universities and public research centres in a knowledge production system. Institutional quality is defined as a set of features of the institutions that influence their functioning and the fulfilment of theirs missions. It is quality conceptualized thought several dimensions: contextual conditions related to socio-economic and legal elements (autonomy and bureaucracy), internal conditions (meritocracy, particular interests, and organized groups) and external conditions (proactivity, innovation, and alliance with influential actors). The general assumption is that specific configurations of these conditions affect both governance and institutional performance. The article uses the sociological perspective to outline an analytical framework, interpreted as a middle-range theory, oriented towards empirical research. A set of hypotheses are presented as a guide to study the components of institutional quality. From an empirical perspective, it recommends a multi-method procedure to provide system-wide diagnostics as a whole and comparative analysis. |
