Contribution of the Algiers earthquake (Mw 6.8) of May 21, 2003 to the probabilistic seismic hazard values in Northern Algeria

On May 21, 2003, at 18:44 UTC (19:44 local time), a strong shallow earthquake with magnitude MW 6.8 caused severe damage in five wilayas (provinces) in the north central part of Algeria. The epicenter was located by the CRAAG offshore at (36.91°N, 3.58°E), 7 km to the north of Zemmouri, in the wilay...

The epicenter was located by the CRAAG offshore at (36.91°N, 3.58°E), 7 km to the north of Zemmouri, in the wilaya of Boumerdes, about 50 km toward the north-east of Algiers, the capital of Algeria. A new catalog is consequently used to evaluate the contribution of this earthquake in the updating of the recently published probabilistic seismic hazard estimation in northern Algeria (Peláez et al., 2003a), and to perform an improved seismic hazard zoning for an efficient contribution to the revision of the Algerian building code. The spatially smoothed seismicity methodology, applied in our previous study, is also used here. The time span of the catalog, 300 years, is appropriate to perform such seismic hazard studies in northern Algeria. The new seismic hazard map in terms of mean PGA for a 10% probability of exceedance in 50 years, shows a clear change. We have obtained in the central part of the Tellian Atlas, specifically in the Zemmouri-Boumerdes-Algiers area, seismic hazard values about 40% higher than in our previous assessment.Seismological Press202620262004info:eu-repo/semantics/bookapplication/pdfhttps://hdl.handle.net/10953/6951reponame:RUJA.
