| Sumario: | [EN] Abstrac The proliferation of non-invasive methods of scientific analysis is unquestionable. Most of these analytical and diagnostic techniques have been developed in other areas with greater projection and progress, such as in medicine, engineering and the industry. However, this fact does not render them exclusive to those fields. Their adaptation to the study of Cultural Assets is essential to updating new analysis methods applied to conservation and restoration. Used in medical imaging, Computed Tomography (CT) is one of those techniques that has been applied to the study of works of art. Its use has opened an avenue to the study of internal structures, execution techniques and conservation condition of sculptures, which has raised great interest in conservators in the use of the technique as a working tool. Since 2006, the Sub-directorate for Conservation, Restoration and Research IVC+R Culturarts, and the Department for Cultural Heritage Conservation and Restoration of the Provincial Council of Castellón (Servicio de Conservación y Restauración de Bienes Culturales, SCRC), in liaison with the Radiology Service of the Provincial Hospital Consortium of Castellón, have been conducting a number of studies using medical-imaging CT applied to the analysis of polychrome wood sculptures. After the work done over the few past years, the aim of this research is to explore the possibilities of this powerful imaging technique given its potential for the analysis and study of polychrome wood sculptures in particular. The paper begins with an introduction and an analysis of the State of the Art, and continues with the objectives and working methodology. The study has been conducted in three distinctive phases. A first theoretical stage focused on developing all aspects related to CT used in medical imaging as such, and on the characteristics, alterations and damage in the conservation condition of polychrome wood sculptures. In a second experimental phase, the capabilities and constraints of two CT scanners, Siemens Somatom Definition Flash¿ and Siemens Somatom Sensation 16¿, were explored to then proceed to analyse, using them, a test tube pattern as a real model of a wood sculpture. The last phase was practical and consisted of two blocks. The first block started with the adaptation of the processing of CT images with a view to establishing a working methodology and some study protocols. Strongly research-oriented, the second block included the study of 16 religious polychrome wood statues applying the aforesaid methodology and protocols. |
