Monthly, from march 2015 to march 2016, four experimental bottom trawls were conducted: two inside the closed fishing ground and two inside a neighbouring area where fishing was permitted. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of the spatial-temporal closure of the fishing on the whole macrobenthic community. Mean density and biomass of the whole community as well as of the main representative taxonomic groups were compared between areas, showing significantly higher values in the closed area than in the surrounding fishing area. Additionally, diversity indices were analysed spatially and seasonally, exhibiting similar results. Spatial ordination methods for both density and biomass showed two well-defined assemblages: one corresponding to the fishing allowed area and the other one related to the fishing closed area. The identification of the species and classes that contributed most to the dissimilarity between areas exhibited higher density and biomass values in the closed area and revealed that macrobenthic species characterised by reduced mobility and high catchability were much more affected by bottom trawling activities. The results also showed that seasonality was overlapped by the effect of fishing vessel (two different vessels were used during the sampling). Thus, the present study showed that the establishment of the spatial-temporal closed fishing area reported positive effects on the overall macrobenthic community, suggesting that it might probably be an efficient management measure for protecting commercial important fishery resources and fragile benthic systems that have been overexploited by bottom trawling fisheriesPeer ReviewedUniversidad de BarcelonaCSIC - Instituto de Ciencias del Mar (ICM)Fernandez-Arcaya, U.Recasens, Laura2018201820162018info:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesishttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_bdcchttp://hdl.handle.net/10261/172582reponame:DIGITAL.CSIC.
