Characteristics of widespread extreme precipitation events in Peninsular Spain and the Balearic Islands: spatio-temporal dynamics and driving mechanisms

This study analysed widespread extreme precipitation events (WEPEs) across Spain using a high-density network of daily precipitation records, aiming to clarify their spatiotemporal trends and drivers. The findings reveal that WEPEs in Spain show a non-significant trend in either frequency or intensi...

The findings reveal that WEPEs in Spain show a non-significant trend in either frequency or intensity since 1961, despite the prevailing trend of global warming. Nevertheless, atmospheric circulation plays a key role in shaping WEPEs in Spain, with five distinct synoptic patterns driving extreme precipitation across different regions. Westerly flows associated with Atlantic lows lead to widespread precipitation in northern and western Spain, while cut-off lows generate intense but more localized events, particularly in the east. Jet stream anomalies and moisture transport patterns, particularly from the Mediterranean and Atlantic, further modulate the spatial distribution and intensity of WEPEs, highlighting the interaction between regional and large-scale climatic drivers. These findings highlight the importance of distinguishing between widespread and localized EPEs and the associated atmospheric mechanisms.Springer NatureUniversidad Complutense de Madrid20252025-08-3020252025-08-30journal articlehttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501VoRhttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85info:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttps://hdl.handle.net/20.500.14352/129491reponame:Docta Complutenseinstname:Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM)InglésengAgencia Estatal de Investigación http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100011033 Plan Estatal de Investigación Científica y Técnica y de Innovación 2021-2023 TED2021-129152B-C41Agencia Estatal de Investigación http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100011033 Plan Estatal de Investigación Científica y Técnica y de Innovación 2021-2023 PID2022-137244OB-I00 MECANISMOS DE LAS OLAS DE CALOR Y SEQUIAS EN ESPAÑA: EL PAPEL DE LAS RETROALIMENTACIONES SUELO-ATMOSFERA Y LA DINAMICA ATMOSFERICAAgencia Estatal de Investigación http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100011033 Plan Estatal de Investigación Científica y Técnica y de Innovación 2021-2023 PID2021-122314OB-I00 EVALUACION EN ALTA RESOLUCION DEL TRANSPORTE DE HUMEDAD EN EL ATLANTICO NORTE EN CLIMA ACTUAL Y EN LAS PROYECCIONES FUTURAS DEL CMIP-6Agencia Estatal de Investigación http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100011033 Plan Estatal de Investigación Científica y Técnica y de Innovación 2021-2023 TED2021-129152B-C43open accesshttp://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2Attribution 4.0 Internationalhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessoai:docta.ucm.es:20.500.14352/1294912026-06-02T12:44:21Z
