Nowadays there are many on-line foreign language courses in the Internet. The present study aims at analyzing the effectiveness of these on line self-learning courses. With this aim, we selected a group of students enrolled in two on-line courses of Catalan and English, respectively, i.e. the experimental group, and compared their results with those of another group of students of English and Catalan, who followed on site language lessons, i.e. the control group. The results obtained show that the students from the experimental group improved their writing skills while the control group improved their oral ones. Finally, all students answered a questionnaire to evaluate the motivation and satisfaction generated by this experiment. Findings show that the experimental group was more satisfied and motivated to follow with selflearning activities than the control group.[ES] El aprendizaje de lenguas a través del ordenador (ALAO) es un campo de estudio con más de medio siglo de tradición que actualmente suscita gran interés, ya que es una de las parcelas del aprendizaje de idiomas que incorpora la innovación tecnológica (Chapelle, 2001; 2003; Dudeney, 2007). Muestra de ello es la proliferación de cursos para el auto-aprendizaje de lenguas existentes en Internet. En esta investigación hemos analizado la efectividad de estos cursos de auto-aprendizaje en línea. Con este fin, hemos seleccionado un grupo de estudiantes de catalán y otro de inglés que han utilizado cursos on-line y que han constituido el grupo experimental. Así mismo, hemos seleccionado otro grupo de alumnos de inglés y catalán que no han utilizado este tipo de recursos en su formación, el grupo de control. Los resultados obtenidos en este estudio demuestran que los estudiantes del grupo experimental mejoraron en sus habilidades comunicativas escritas, mientras que el grupo de control lo hizo en sus habilidades orales. Finalmente, los dos grupos contestaron un cuestionario para medir la motivación y satisfacción que había generado este experimento.
