Sumario:[EN] With this research it is pretended to deepen the knowledge of a specific typology of colonial sculpture, created in New Spain since the sixteenth century and that was the miscegenation product after the arrival of the Spaniards to America. It is about the lightweight sculpture made from materials derived from corn stalk: the stem, whole pith, and the finely ground pith and agglutinated, to form therewith a paste to model its parts. Corn, main nourishment of the original inhabitants of America, was used by pre-Hispanic cultures for many purposes, and with it, they also performed sculptures for represent and worship their deities. Not many copies that remain from this sculptural typology, which is included in the group known as "lightweight sculpture" as this is a main feature of most of the pieces made with corn stalk. The denomination is completed with the name of the specific material that predominates in the artwork. Thus, the images that will be studied throughout this research be referred to as "cornstalk lightweight sculptures". To increase knowledge of the works, research will address to assess the behavior of the constituent materials through exposure to the agents of deterioration of atmospheric origin that usually affect the images and are responsible for their physical, chemical, structural changes, etc. The research approach for evaluating material components will be by conducting samples that mimic the materials and the manufacturing processes of a real sculpture. These samples later will be subjected to weathering elements (light, humidity and temperature) on isolated aging chambers, designed and created for this laboratory experimentation. The final purpose of the research aimed at preservation of the sculptures, is the knowledge of the degradation mechanisms of materials, leading the researcher to understand the behavior of the artworks wherever maintenance conditions are not optimal, in order to establish appropriate parameters and formulate proposals for intervention to ensure proper conservation of the artworks.
