El surgimiento de los estados modernos cambió las sociedades tradicionales, los estilos de vida y la vida privada de los individuos y grupos sociales. También es característico de este período que los movimientos de reforma social aparecieron en gran número, como un «contrapeso» a cambios inéditos, rápidos y profundos. Algunos de estos movimientos buscaban lograr los cambios necesarios con la ayuda de la autoreforma individual.
