Sumario:The dissertation focuses on the study of the morphology of modern city from the analysis of the free space. This research aims to provide original and unpublished elements in this issue. The following work finds its leiv-motiv in the formulation of three questions: - Is there in modern urbanism a real systemation of free space? - In case of an affirmative answer: does such systemation build an instrumental corpus that can be applied on proposals diverse in their temporary and spatial context? - Does this instrumental corpus provide criteria that help us in the intervention and urban regeneration of these neighborhoods? Objectives : - Categorization and description of the "types" and logics of composition of free spaces of the urban proposal developed by modern urbanism in central Europe. - Description of the evolution and process in the formalization of the free space, relating it to the cultural context and the crisis of the modern ideology in town planning. - Description of projects or actions of urban regeneration on the residential modern legacy that contribute to the contemporary interpretations of free space. Argument and structure: The argument that structures the narrative unity of the dissertation will be the work of Ernst May. His professional activity constitutes one example of continuity and excellent quality along the temporary period defined as object of study (1926-68). As a result of this dissertation, a global vision of May's proposals will be obtained. Due to the scale of his interventions, May develops a series of concepts that, updated to the current situation, are of great actuality in the contemporary discussion. There are selected the cases that are considered to be more representative: Praunheim, Westhausen/Gartenstadt Goldstein, Makeevka, Port Tudor, Gartenstadt Vahr, Grünhoffe, Hethold, Neue Vahr, Wiesbaden Parkfeld, Wulfen Stadt i Kranichstein. They are deeply analized.
