Descripción
Sumario:We present an exploratory, descriptive and comparative work conducted in the Basque Country with a sample of 1651 subjects (N=857 sons and N=794 daughters) whose ages range between 9 and 18. The aim of this study is to analyze the nature of sons’ and daughters’ participation in family work, as well as the sources of influence and their consequences, particularly, their link to children’s development in several areas of competence. The conclusions of this work point out that children’s participation in household tasks: 1) increases with age, and this for all sorts of tasks except for those done for others; 2) is influenced by the parents’ educational level, children’s sex and age, attitude towards sexual role and a number of family climate variables; 3) favours the development of a series of socialization processes in children. We mention some educational benefits and implications deriving from children’s participation in household work.
